Legal Goat ("we," "us," or "our") operates legalgoat.co. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that information. By using Legal Goat, you agree to the practices described here.

1. Information We Collect

Information you provide directly: When you create an account, claim a firm profile, or contact us, we collect your name, email address, and any other information you submit.

Payment information: When you subscribe to a paid plan, your payment is processed by Stripe. We do not store your credit card number — Stripe handles all payment data under their own privacy policy.

Directory data: Law firm and attorney information displayed on Legal Goat (names, addresses, phone numbers, practice areas) is sourced from publicly available records. If you are a listed firm or attorney and wish to correct or remove your information, please contact us.

Usage data: We automatically collect information about how you use the site, including pages visited, search queries, browser type, IP address, and referring URLs. This is collected via Google Analytics (GA4).

Cookies: We use cookies and similar technologies for analytics, authentication (via Clerk), and advertising (via Google AdSense). You can control cookies through your browser settings.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide and improve the Legal Goat directory service
  • Process subscription payments and manage your account
  • Respond to your inquiries and support requests
  • Send transactional emails (account confirmations, billing receipts)
  • Send marketing emails to law firms listed in our directory about claiming their profile (CAN-SPAM compliant — see Section 6)
  • Analyze usage patterns to improve site performance and content
  • Display relevant advertising via Google AdSense

3. Third-Party Services

We share data with the following third-party services to operate Legal Goat:

  • Clerk — user authentication and account management
  • Stripe — payment processing for subscriptions
  • Neon — database hosting (your data is stored on Neon-managed PostgreSQL servers in the US)
  • Vercel — website hosting and deployment
  • Resend — transactional and outreach email delivery
  • Google Analytics — traffic and usage analytics
  • Google AdSense — advertising
  • HubSpot — CRM for managing firm outreach (firm contact information only)

Each of these services has its own privacy policy governing how they handle data.

4. Data Retention

We retain your account information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide services. If you close your account, we will delete your personal information within 90 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal or billing purposes.

Directory data (firm and attorney listings) is retained indefinitely as part of the public directory. Firms and attorneys may request removal at any time by contacting us.

5. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
  • Correction: Request that we correct inaccurate information
  • Deletion: Request that we delete your personal data
  • Opt-out of marketing: Unsubscribe from marketing emails at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email we send

6. Email Marketing & CAN-SPAM Compliance

We send outreach emails to law firms listed in our directory to inform them about their listing and the option to claim their profile. Every marketing email we send includes:

  • A clear identification of Legal Goat as the sender

  • A working unsubscribe mechanism (one-click, honored within 10 business days)

7. California Residents (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), including the right to know what personal information we collect, the right to delete your personal information, and the right to opt out of the sale of your personal information.

8. Children's Privacy

Legal Goat is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us immediately.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify registered users of material changes by email or by posting a notice on the site. Your continued use of Legal Goat after changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
